Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Art Contest at the Webb City Public Library Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is defined by Wikipedia as a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Mexican Americans that focuses on the gathering of family and friends to remember friends and family who have passed on. The celebration occurs on November 2nd in connection with the All Saint's Day (November 1st) and All Souls' Day (November 2nd). Traditions with this holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, as well as the favorits foods beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these gifts. Suitable entries in our art contest include Calaveras and Catrinas (skulls and skeletons with personality); Nichos and Ofrendas (shadow boxes and altars honoring the dead), papier mache masks, sugar or wax skulls, jewelry or wall art. Art pieces need to be submitted by October 4th. The exhibit will run from October 11th through November 6th on the main floor of the library.
